Power pop post-punk indie rock trio from New York State make
a long-awaited return to European shores fresh on the heels of

Bordering on beyond words, dual guitars, dual bass and group harmonies
make for the most fantastic of experiences. Like every band you've ever
loved but you'd be wrong to compare them to. Unmissable. http://soundcloud.com/crash-of-rhinos/sets/distal-trx/

NARROWS, HAMMERS, ROT IN HELL Tues 4th May @ Star & Garter
£8adv/£9otd NARROWS (USA, UK. Deathwish Records)
Spread out across both the United States and two continents, Narrows exists despite geographical inconveniences for the sole purpose of creating devastating noise. Featuring members of bands including These Arms Are Snakes, Botch and Some Girls, Narrows' sound is anchored by a minimalist punk framework and elaborated by squalls of angular guitar noise. Helmed by Dave Verellen's signature roar, the resulting compositions owe as much to the early hardcore pioneers as to New York and London's post-punk founders. Terminally bleak, counter-intuitive to the standard rock paradigm, and at odds with everyone, Narrow's debut is an angry slab of nihilistic abandon.
http://www.myspace.com/narrows HAMMERS (Manchester. React With Protest, Alerta Antifascista, Hit Time Records)
First Manchester gig in nearly SEVEN MONTHS. Heavy, dark hardcore with thrash abandon. A bit like maybe if Artimus Pyle played the songs
from the first Baroness record. Playing songs old, some from their current 12" LP 'Orogeny' and a few new songs from upcoming split records with Dolcim (USA) and The Infarto Schiesse (Italy). Ex-The Secret (Southern Lord recs)
http://www.myspace.com/hammers625 ROT IN HELL (Manchester. Deathwish Records, Thirty Days Of Night)
Holy Terror hardcore from Manchester. Brutal and harsh deliver in a geniuine misanthropic rage.
Split with Integrity out pretty soon (or maybe even out now?) on TDON.
The Star & Garter is on Fairfield St, behind Picc. Station.
City of Manchester.

SUPER FUN CHRISTMAS PARTY INDIE/POP/PUNK GIG IN MANCHESTER!
REAL COLLECTIVE CHRISTMAS PARTY!
Monday 21st December 2009 HOT CLUB DE PARIS
From the bone-shivering days of gigs in the Phoenix, these three Liverpudlian boys have captivated with their lovable Kinsella-fueled jangly triple harmonies and irresistably catchy pop songs. Now signed to Moshi Moshi Records and with album number 3 on the way, they return to play one of the smallest venues they'll have played in quite some time. Bring. The. Party! http://www.myspace.com/hotclubdeparis
THE GATEWAY DISTRICT
Former and current members of Soviettes, Off With Their Heads, Salteens, Banner Pilot and Dear Landlord to name but a few. Quality you'd expect from such an all-star team, but imagine rather than a poor imitation of their other bands, the perfect blend of every influence forged into one seamless, rocking amalgamation of country punk, melodic pop and punk rock. http://www.myspace.com/thegatewaydistrict
Josie and the Pussycats incarnate! Super twee and sweet pop like Unlovables, the Donnas or maybe even Bis. Currently rocking their new and debut record 'Go Fight Win!', this is pretty much going to be the best party ever.
Reppin' the Real Collective at their Christmas Party. Party punk like Descendents, Mika Miko and/or X-Ray Spex and the Ting Tings. Whatever. Fun times presented in an easy to follow and shuffle format. Former members of The Cost Of Living, Postcards From Wakanda and Hammers. http://www.myspace.com/gettingprettyserious

The Real Collective presents; EARLY DAY MINERS
Dreamy lullabies bridging the gap between luscious 90's indie rock
(think the quieter moments of Elliot, SDRE..) and the haunting sadness
of slower, more contemplative folk/indie (think Low, Ida, Nick Cave..)
Finally on their first ever tour of the United Kingdom, for the release of
their SEVENTH studio album, 'The Treatment', they visit Manchester as
their only North/Midlands show of a short, selective tour. Records released
on Secretly Canadian records (Damien Jurado, Antony and the Johnsons, Dirty
Projectors etc) and sure to be a delight. http://www.myspace.com/earlydayminersband EMPHEMETRY
Biff from The Little Explorer and Crash Of Rhinos plays the most beautiful and gently
hushed songs. It's been four years since he's last played in Manchester (at the Phoenix
with Molia Falls, no less) and here he'll be again. Listen to songs at; http://www.myspace.com/timetravelopps ABOVE THEM
Beautiful and incredibly anthemic indie rock from t'other side of the Pennines. Full on
what the hell amazing. New record 'Blueprint For a Better Time' out now on LP at this gig! http://www.myspace.com/abovethem THE FTSE 100
Financial funk from former and current members of Burnst, Germany and the Freezing

TOMORROW IN MANCHESTER! LOVELY INDIE/POP/PUNK GIG!
TOMORROW! TUESDAY 16TH JUNE 2009!
The Real Collective presents;LEMURIA
(east coast, usa)The return of the lovely power-pop trio return to Manchester,
almost two years after they first stole everyone's hearts and
made everyone fall in love with their cute, downright adorable
blend of punk and slick indie power pop. Now releasing records
on Asian Man (including their most recent LP, 'Get Better'). Just,
seriously the sweetest loveliest people making the most perfect
music. Excited? You fucking bet. No venue changes, this is at
Retro Bar. You got it.
(west coast, usa)Awesome catchy and message-carrying pop/punk from San
Francisco. Taking cues from old peace punk like Crass and
Chumbawamba and modernising it into an even more accessible
and meaningful manner. If we're giving more contemporary clues,
imagine if Fifth Hour Hero were making records towards the more-
political-than-twee side of Plan-It-X. Ex-Crimpshrine and current-
Onion Flavoured Rings, on Thrillhouse Records.
(hull)New band from t'other side of the Pennines, playing great melodic
punk rock with the time-tested and proven win-fest that is intertwining
boy/girl vocals. Lazy comparison would be This Is My Fist maybe? But it
certainly wouldn't be anywhere near a bad thing if that was how they
(manchester)Mika Miko meets the Descendents, maybe? Shouty vocals, dancetastic
riff after riff, flitting between anthemic melodic punk and short, jerky jangly
not-disco disco beats. Ex-Postcards From Wakanda.
(manchester)The continuation of local scrappy pop heroes Lion perhaps, but with drawn influences from
a little bit o'thrash, a tough of prog noodlin' and a penchant for all things pop and punk.
at Retro Bar,
7pm - £6 please (two US bands to pay, sorry!)

|Tuesday, May 12th, 2009|
The Real Collective presents;
Monday 18th May 2009HUMANFLY
(Leeds)From the ashes of Canvas came a rock machine so fierce.. gradually
evolving into the riffing, epic and crushing monster that is Humanfly.
Equal parts progressive, epic metal.. and relentless atmospheric sludge.
Holy yes. Long time since I've put these gentlemen on in Manchester.
(Dublin/Poland)People from Ireland and Poland who have done or still do bands such as
Easpa Measa, Silence, Crowd Control, Antichrist and Mongolia.. playing dark
and heavy crust-hardcore just how it should be done. Split 7" with Karaktermoord
out now. Last show of their UK/European tour!
(Manchester/Switzerland)Bit of d-beat, bit of thrash, lot of rock. Hard-workin' punks playing Dark, bleak
hardcore. Split 7" with Jesus Of Spazzareth should be out for this gig!
(All over the North West..)Folks who have been or still are in bands such as Burn All Flags, The Autonomads,
Dreams Are Free Motherfucker!, War Coma, Anxiety Attack etc, etc.. playing rad
hardcore punk packed with thrash, rock and melody aplenty.
at the Retro Bar
Sackville St, Manchester
8-11pm - £3 please
8.15-8.30 LIE CYCLE
The Real Collective presents;
Saturday 16th May 2009CHEAP GIRLS
(Michigan, USA)Mixing Buffalo Tom, the Replacements, Husker Du and well, pretty much
any influential indie rock or country punk peers and coming out clean the
other side with a record full of catch, lovable and memorable tunes that
any of the aforementioned would be proud of, recently released on Paper &
Plastick records (Shook Ones, Landmines et al) Just lovely.
(Portsmouth, Isle Of Wight & Cambridge)A band in which to practice, one of them needs to take a boat, and another needs
to drive for several hours. UK heroes playing with their influences firmly on display -
heartfelt and singalong gruffy punk. Ex-Jets Vs Sharks and many others.
(Pontefract)Too bloody good. I'm not even describing these anymore.
(Manchester)First gig for a band that hasn't even practiced yet. Party punk a la Descendents, X,
Bikini Kill.. rowdy times. People you will recognise, getting drunk. Mostly.

SHOOK ONES IN MANCHESTER! 29th APRIL!
This is the only Shook Ones gig between Newcastle and London. 5 UK dates only.Wednesday 29th April 2009
SHOOK ONES (Seattle, USA)
Somehow managing to take the Kid Dynamite template for amazing pop-hooked
filled hardcore and run with it so fast and so far that it becomes even poppier, yet
just as hard-hitting and awesome.. ladies and gents, you know 'em, you love 'em,
yes. Shook Ones in Manchester. Records out on Revelation records and Paper & Plastick,
including two incredible full lengths, and a bunch of killer splits, these guys will bring the
rock action if you bring the partyparty.
DOWN AND OUTS (Liverpool)
Super melodic and ace anthemic power pop street punk from th'Pool on Dead & Gone records.
RED TAPE PARADE (Germany)
Energetic upbeat pop-core from das Deutschland, have released a split with End Of A Year
and just play good honest punk rock, perhaps a little Saves The Day-y, perhaps a little Fat Wreck-y,
certainly a lot o' fun.
Crust for clean people. 7" out now!

8pm doors, first band shortly after.
£6 in, please.
Gigs in Manchester in the next two weeks..
Friday 24th April 2009BRIDGE AND TUNNEL
(New York and thereabouts, USofA)Spectacular, powerful, crazily intricate yet totally and utterly
balls-out rocking indie punk on No Idea records. Released one of
the records of the year in 2008 with their debut full length 'East/West'
and pretty much stunned everyone who saw them at Fest with how
downright devastatingly mindblowing they were. Easily one of the
best bands you will see in 2009, even if you saw every other band
in existence ever. Not to be missed. A lot of people say that, but I'm
not kidding, ask anyone. Not to be missed.
(Exeter, UK)One of the best bands in the country, hailing from the darkest corners
of the South West, which conveniently doubles as a hot bed for some of
the UK's finest and most honed musicians/bands. Equal parts Bluetip/
Dischord-drenched post hardcore, and Gainesville-trademark-gruff-crunch,
these boys not only rocked our own country last year, but made a distinctly
awesome impression on the USA, playing No Idea's Fest 7 in Florida and
releasing a record on Florida label Fail Safe Records. Loveliest dudes
playing the rockingest of tunes.
(Manchester, UK)No myspace. No mp3s. No demo
BREAK THE HABIT
(Brighton, UK)Radtastic melodic punk like Shermer, Latterman et al.. songs to sing the
heck along to once you know the words.. and trust, one day soon you will and
you will. More sweet Southern dudes playing the sweetest of jams.
at KRO Bar,Oxford Rd, opposite Manchester Uni
Students Union/Academy b
8pm - £5 please.
Tuesday 28th April 2009SHOT BAKER
(Chicago, USA)Just bloody ace punk n'roll from the US, combining great punk rock with a
proper rock'n'roll swagger. "No 'post' this or that, no pretense, nothing arty,
no sappy emo, no indie-rock, no hybrid anything. It's an honest formula:
music that rocks + punk aggressiveness." Records on Underground
Communique records (J Robbins' Channels, the Methadones, Capital and
http://www.myspace.com/shotbakerTHE DAUNTLESS ELITE (Leeds)

Reminds me a lot of late-90s US college rock, meets the good kind of Deep Elm indie-mo.
Just really nice.

Punk gigs in Manchester this week..!
Two great punk gigs in Manchester this week..
Wednesday 10th DecemberDEATH IS NOT GLAMOROUS
Pretty fucking amazing jump-about melodic-and-then-some
hardcore pop from Norway on Dead & Gone records. Falling
somewhere between Jerseys Best Dancers and the s/t Lifetime
records, mixed with the tiniest inklings of incredibly awesome driving 90's
indie/emo rock. In fact, I'm g'na go as far as saying 95% Lifetime, 5%
Cross My Heart-ish. Mostly like Lifetime, though.
DOWN AND OUTS

Friday 14th November 2008CLOAK/DAGGER
(usa)"You guys were really good,
my dad says you sound like Minor Threat
but I think you sound like Avail."
- 12 year old, 2006
Furiously awesome hardcore punk from Richmond, VA.
People who used to be in American Nightmare and other
killer bands, play energetic dancable punk like a modern
day Black Flag or like one of those abundances of Portland
bands currently rockin' the 80's sound. Totally amazing, and
on none other than Jade Tree records.http://www.myspace.com/wearecloakdaggerDOWN AND OUTS
Totally 'mazing street pop punk from Liverpool, on Dead & Gone
records amongst others. Songs about birds and tha'.
Fun time punk'n'roll from Exeter, mixin' punk hardcore with
blues and rock and roll. Think maybe Minor Threat mixed with
The Germs/Nerve Agents. Good times!
Our favourite Sheffield boys come back to Manchester to get
a bit drunk (and by 'a bit', I mean very.) and play fricken' incredible
melodic punk, pretty much exactly like Lifetime. When they can
remember their songs, that is.
Harsh but ultra-melodic punx, you've seen them before, you've
bought their exquisitely packaged CD, and now.. you'll see them
tear it up again.
THE COST OF LIVING
